    Notes
    • On September 9, 1863, Lafcadio entered Saint Cuthbert's College, Ushaw,Yorkshire, where, during a game of Giant's Stride the knotted end of a rope slipped from a schoolmate's hand and struck him in the left eye, totally blinding it.

Later he was sent to France, most likely to Les Petits Preceptcurs, a Roman Catholic college at Yvetot, near Rouen, and in the later part of 1869, he was sent passage money and told to go to America. He was instructed to go to Cincinnati, Ohio, where a Mr. Cullinane would be supplied with more money to give him from time to time. No more money would be sent him in France.

He left Europe hotly resolved to cut all ties with his hated Catholic past, and the first step was to drop the 'Patrick' from his name and be, simply,Lafcadio Hearn.
    • (Research):Lafcadio became a Japanese citizen in 1895 under the name Yakumo Koizumi.

    • Charles and Rosa's first child was a son, who died shortly after birth, and neither his name nor birth date was ever given by the Hearn family. But on June 27th, 1850, Lafcadio was born in Santa Maura.
For the next eighteen months life was pleasantly carefree for the young Hearn family. But in the latter part of 1851,England agreed to withdraw part of her forces of occupation and Charles was assigned to duty in the West Indies. His new post in Grenada provided no accommodations for his wife and child, and with Rosa still estranged from her family he could think of only one solution to the problem.

Rosa and Lafcadio were taken in by Lafcadio's paternal grand aunt ,Sarah Brenane,a rich widow,of Rathmines(Charles had always been her favourite nephew). Sarah, who had converted to the Catholic faith at the request of her late husnband,Justin Bernane, wished to make Lafcadio heir to the Brenane fortune if she could take charge of his training and educate him in the best Roman Catholic schools.(She would later recant this thought,as she could no longer risk "leaving her estate in the hands of a non-believer")
Whatever the Hearn family may have thought of this,Rosa immediately gave her consent, and if Charles had any religious scruples they were overcome by more practical considerations.
Meanwhile ,Rosa's physical and mental health began to falter, and in 1853 Charles was invalided home from Grenada to Dublin to recuperate after contracting Yellow Fever. A fellow officer told him Mrs. George John Crawford( his first love,Alicia"Posy" Goslin) was now a widow, and still living in Dublin.Charles and Alicia had wished to marry seven years earlier, but Alicia's family felt Charles social status was not suitable, they had married her off to George Crawford. Charles took Lafcadio to visit Alicia, but when Sarah Bernane discovered this fact, she flew into a rege ,and as she was responsible for his son the child was never again to be taken near that woman!

In 1854 ,with Rosa's condition not improving ,and Charles now a being persona non gratis at Rathmines, he was ordered to the Crimean War ,c1854.Rosa was also pregnant, and when James Daniel was born,he was taken into the Hearn family, and spent much of his time away from Dublin ,and Lafcadio only ever saw his younger brother once ,when James was four years of age.
A year and a half of strenuous service in the poorly conducted Crimean campaign brought Charles's regiment back to Ireland in the spring of 1856. It had fought through the battles of Alma and Inkermann and the long siege of Sevastopol, and was now stationed at the Curragh for a well-deserved rest.

Shortly after Rosa ,who had agreed to a dissolution of the marriage, departed Ireland , and returned to Malta ,never to see her husband or children again.

Charles married Alicia Crawford,(mother of two young daughters)on the 18th July ,1857, and was soon transferred to India and took his new family with him .He sent letters back to Lafcadio, but eventually dropped out of Lafcadio's life altogether. His grand aunt also made the edict that Lafcadio would now be known as Patrick.

    • Although the courthouse records for that period were later burned in a riot, Lafcadio seems to have secured a license himself, apparently through withholding the fact that Alethea was a Negress. After his death Alethea's claim to a widow's share of his estate was denied on the grounds that such a marriage could have been performed only by fraud, but the court felt compelled to believe her testimony and supporting witnesses.
